| Coated Hand-held
Weights and Dumbbells
Believe it or not, coated weight lifting and workout
equipment can be another source of lead contamination.
Hand-held dumbbells and jogging weights commonly have a PVC or
"neoprene" coating that contains lead. Click here
for more information on lead
stabilizers in PVC.
Health Hazards: Because the acidity of sweat
accelerates the leaching process, regular use of these
products can be a substantial source of lead exposure.
How to Avoid or Minimize
Exposure: Test your coated weight products with a home
lead test kit and buy lead-free brands when possible.
If you use weights that have leaded coatings, wash your hands
thoroughly after using them.
