PVC Wires and Cords on Electronics

This one affects just about everybody. Did you know that almost all the plastic-coated cords on your modern electronic products (computer, telephone, fax, TV, stereo, etc.) are made of PVC? Click here for more info on Lead Stabilizers in PVC.

Health Hazards: The lead in PVC cords can rub off on hands. Obviously you don't want these cords in kids' mouths, nor do you want to idly twist and play with a leaded PVC phone cord, for example, while having a conversation. Test your cords with a home lead test kit.

How to Avoid or Minimize Exposure: Wash your hands after handling cords. People who work with PVC cords, such as electricians, computer or network installers, cable TV installers, etc., should be particularly careful to wash their hands frequently. There is at least one reported case of severe lead poisoning from chewing on PVC cable sheathing. Keep the cords out of your mouth.
