| Leaded Crystal Decanters and Stemware
One might think this is a practice of the past, but 99% of
all crystal is still leaded, presumably because it adds color
and heft to glasses, vases, and decanters. These products
usually contain 24% lead, some contain up to 36%.
Health Hazards:
The lead in these crystal products leaches into
drinks, particularly acidic drinks like wine and alcohol,
apple juice, tomato juice, citrus juices, etc. The longer the
liquid remains in the container the more lead is transferred.
Storing alcohol in a fancy leaded-crystal decanter is a
high-class invitation to lead consumption. Strangely enough,
this remains a popular gift for newlyweds often planning for
pregnancy.
How to Avoid or Minimize Exposure: There
are a few lead-free lines of crystal, including the Riedel
"Overture" line. Ask salespeople in stores for
alternatives to leaded crystal.
